Tom Smith is the leader for HoganTaylor’s State and Local Sales & Use Tax practice (SALT) and has doubled its growth since it was founded in early 2010. It is the largest practice of its kind in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Now with 12 team members, which includes former state auditors and an attorney, Tom and his team have been instrumental in assisting businesses in various industry segments recover millions of dollars in overpaid taxes through their proactive self audits. The HoganTaylor SALT team also helps companies manage state tax audits; often during this process they uncover tax overpayments the state auditors overlook. Helping clients avoid either over-paying taxes or being out of compliance because they didn’t understand the maze of state and local tax laws, is the heart of their expertise. Tom also consults with various entities in training in-house staff on how to properly manage state and local tax issues.
Tom has over 20 years experience specializing in state and local taxation. Tom grew up on a ranch in Eastern Oklahoma, and focused on the oil and gas industry for many years. In the late 90’s Tom found himself in the Southeast for several years living in Atlanta and spending a lot of time in Nashville, Tennessee. During those years he developed significant expertise in the healthcare industry and still serves many of those clients today, some of whom are the largest healthcare organizations in the country.
Although Tom’s career began as an auditor for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, Tom transitioned into public accounting spending nearly 15 years working in the Big Four. Tom joined Coopers and Lybrand as a senior in 1996, and after the merger with Price Waterhouse, Tom moved onto a regional position with Ernst & Young working in Memphis, Nashville and Atlanta. Before joining HoganTaylor in 2010 to begin its SALT practice, Tom led the indirect tax practice for KPMG’s Dallas Business Unit. Tom was with KPMG for nine years.
